As Lent arrives, I see you, my impulsive, sometimes sneaky, pleasure seeking little numbing sidekick.
But here's the thing my dear, young, "I want what I want when I want it" self. God wants more for you. He really does. And I'm not just saying that because I'm supposed to. You see, I've encountered the living God. And he's anything but boring. He's glorious, and mighty, and sometimes a little scary. He's holy and wholly present. I promise you that this little boundary is nothing compared to the deep, life-giving soul nourishment he has for your mind, heart, spirit, and body.
Can you trust me? Can you trust God? Can you step into this space of going all the way in to becoming even more of your God-reflecting, never-boring, life-changing self? When you numb me out, I miss out on the joy (and sometimes the messiness) of healing relationships and meaningful work.
When you numb me out, I miss out on the love and tenderness that comes from connecting to God in prayer.
When you numb me out, I miss out on the healing and restoration that comes from facing weariness and worry.
I know you mean well. You thought you were trying to help. And I see you growing in humility. . .and in getting more creative with your God-given joy-seeking antennae. I want you to see all that God has for you. You can do this. We'll do it together.
What numbing protector are you giving up this Lent? And what life-giving joy will you replace it with?
